With the rise of cameraphones and compact technology, this has spurred on a whole generation of people taking up photography as a hobby and posting their photos up to outlets such as instagram. Although this style has its restrictions, it also has made the craft more accesible than ever, with everyone carrying a phone with them at all times and has awakened creativity through limitation. At our next meet up Tuesday 12th March, we are very glad to welcome David Rann of Birmingham studio Fotofilia. Located in the Jewellery Quater, Fotofilia has been a pioneer in mobile photography, taking it on board as an equal to more classical styles and offering workshops in iphonegraphy and organising instameets. David will be giving a short discussion on some of the work being produced as well as Q&A session to share your thoughts. We will also be continuing on to Round 3 of Branch – hopefully you have picked your inspiration from here and will bring your submissions along on Tuesday. We will still be meeting up next Tuesday 12th February for the Reference works talk ‘In Conversation with Brian Griffin’, more information here. SO. Here is how Branch will work this month: Scan or photograph the following: a) this month’s entry (response to the photo you took away from last month) and b) the original photograph taken from the pile (please state the number on the back as well). Email both of these to: birminghamlovesphotographers (at ) gmail.com with Subject: Branch Project February. We will then upload these photos into an online ‘pile’ so you can choose which image to take inspiration from next. March will then revert back to being a physical exchange of photos. This means that this month, more than one person can take away an image. This will make for even more interesting results! Please make sure you have emailed your photos by the end of Wednesday. See you next Tuesday!

Well, it’s that time again! Next week will be the second meetup of 2013. Last time we met at 6/8 Kafe , had a debate about film vs digital and launched the new Branch project. We had a fantastic turn out and we hope this continues for the rest of the year. For the second meetup next Tuesday 12th February, we’d like to mix things up a bit, and thought it would be a good idea to go to a Reference Works talk. The talk is the last of a series, and we thought it would be nice to support the work that the Library is doing surrounding photography. The event is called ‘In Conversation with Brian Griffin’. The internationally acclaimed photographer has been taking a series of portraits over the last 12 months, as part of the transition towards the new library. In this final talk ‘Pete James, Head of Photographs at Birmingham Central Library talks to Griffin about the personal and artistic influences that inspired the making of the work.’ Reference Works, Birmingham’s largest photography commission, sees four leading photographers and four students/graduates from Birmingham City University making creative responses to the new Library of Birmingham.
